Winter Skin Care Tips
Skin becomes dry when it loses too much water and oil. This is why skin generally becomes drier during colder months. Restoring lost moisture can make the skin softer, smoother, and less likely to crack. Below are some tips that can help diminish dry winter skin.
Shaving
It is best to shave after bathing when hairs are soft. To minimize the irritating effects of shaving (face or legs) on dry skin, make sure you use a shaving cream/gel. Allow the product to remain on the skin approximately 3 minutes before starting, and shave in the direction that the hair grows. Changing blades often, most certainly after 5-7 shaves, also helps minimize the irritating effects of shaving.
Avoid Hot Water Warm water is best for bathing since hot water accelerates the loss of the natural oils in your skin.
Use a mild Soap
Deodorant bars, strong fragrances in soaps, and products containing alcohol can strip natural oils from the skin causing dryness. Look for a mild, fragrance-free soap or cleanser that moisturizes.
Moisturize Immediately After Baths & Showers
A 5-10 minute bath or shower adds moisture to the skin. Spending any additional time in the water often leaves your skin less hydrated than before you started. To retain moisture from a bath or shower, apply an ointment or cream within 3 minutes of bathing while the skin is still moist.

Tips for Winter: Treating & Preventing Acne
The winter months can be hard on the skin. Whether it’s the cold weather, wind, or dry indoor air; the skin loses a lot of its natural moisture. Treating acne can be a challenge when the use of drying acne fighting products and medications lead to uncomfortable dryness, flaking, and peeling.
What can you do to help keep your skin hydrated throughout the winter months, while still getting the most from your acne treatment routine?
Recommended Regimen: If you have a breakout, use a salicylic acid-based cleanser once in the morning and once in the evening. Cleansing too often will strip the protective layer of your skin and cause additional irritation and dryness, resulting in more breakouts. To minimize oil production and impurities, use a benzoyl peroxide lotion during the day to kill bacteria.
Moisturize: Use a non-clogging, oil-free moisturizer during the winter months. Intense indoor heat and cold temperatures can easily cause surface dryness and damage which prevents your skin from retaining water. A great hydrating agent such as hyaluronic acid will help seal in the water within the underlying layers. This simple step will help to restore the moisture back into the epidermis and strengthen your skin’s natural defense system.
Hydration: Not everyone drinks as much fluid as they should, especially during the winter months. Normally, dehydrated dry skin starts from within, so you must drink a sufficient amount of water daily. This keeps your body and skin hydrated from the inside out, avoiding cellular breakdown, pre-mature aging, and extreme dryness.
Exfoliation: Whether it is hot or cold, failing to exfoliate regularly can increase cellular build-up and clog pores. Sloughing off dead skin cells one to two times a week will help keep your skin functioning properly, minimizing vulnerability to extreme temperature changes.
