November Healthy Skin Month
Keeping your skin healthy and looking its best doesn't necessarily mean breaking the bank if you follow these practical tips from leading dermatologists:
Use sunscreen 365 days a year. This helps prevent sun damage that could lead to wrinkles, age spots, or even skin cancer. Look for sunscreens with physical blocking agents like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They provide broader protection.
Get the most from your body moisturizer. In the winter, apply it to damp skin as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
Consider using petroleum jelly. This common, inexpensive product has several uses for skin care including: moisturizing rough, cracked feet, elbows, and hands; dry cuticles and lips.
Use one or two skin care product lines at a time. Limiting product lines saves money and storage space.
Remember, a more expensive skin care product is not necessarily more effective. Don’t always believe the hype or claims. Many times, less expensive products have more science behind their ingredients than the more expensive ones.
Get the most for your hard-earned money. When choosing anti-aging products, look for ingredients such as vitamin A (retinoic acid/tretinoin) and alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc.)
Consider seeing a dermatologist to discuss any skin care questions or concerns. Please call our office at (512) 482-9344 to schedule a dermatology appointment.

Gorgeous legs with Sclerotherapy
Do you avoid showing your legs because you have spider veins — those small clusters of red, blue, or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles?
You are not alone. It's estimated that at least half of all women are bothered by this common cosmetic problem.
If you would like to eliminate your spider veins and improve your appearance, Dr. Steven E. Rasmussen can help. There is a very effective and safe method available for eradicating spider veins, sclerotherapy. It is the gold standard for treating leg veins. And it is much more effective and less painful than laser treatments.
Is Sclerotherapy right for me? Sclerotherapy can be performed on people of any age and is a good option for you if:
- You are bothered by spider veins anywhere on your body.
- You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are committed to following the prescribed course of treatment.
What happens during spider vein treatment?
Sclerotherapy requires no anesthesia and is performed in an outpatient setting. One or more sessions, each less than 20 minutes, are usually required to obtain the optimal results. The number of treatments depends on the quantity and size of the spider veins. After the treatment series, a quick touch-up procedure is usually needed to address any small remaining veins.
Sclerotherapy treats the spider veins that you have at the time of the treatment, and does not prevent the formation of new spider veins.
With sclerotherapy treatment, a glycerin solution is injected into the affected veins causing the veins to collapse, be destroyed, and fade from view. The veins will disappear immediately but will quickly reappear bright red. Over the next 2-6 weeks (depending on the size and location of the veins) the veins will slowly resolve and disappear. After the procedure, the legs are wrapped with bandages. The doctor will advise you to wear the bandages or support hose for 2-3 weeks following the procedure. A follow-up procedure, if needed, should be scheduled 6-8 weeks afterwards.
