Advice from

What is a liquid facelift?

As our main article discusses, we lose volume in our face over time resulting in wrinkles, sagging skin, and areas of depression, especially in our mid cheeks and temple areas. For decades, plastic surgeons and dermatologic surgeons have been doing traditional facelifts when skin was removed and the remainder of the skin was pulled tight.

However, we have all seen the unnatural appearance that this surgery can create because this procedure is not addressing the cause of the skin laxity which, in most cases, is this loss of volume. Over the past decade, there has been a steady move away from traditional facelifts to procedures that use fillers to revolumize areas of collagen loss to increase the fullness in these areas resulting in a younger appearance…hence the “liquid facelift.”

The most effective agent for this procedure is Sculptra Aesthetic or poly-L-lactic acid. It is natural product that induces new collagen growth gradually over a course of several months. Because it induces the production of patient’s own collagen, the results lasts for years. This revolumenization of the face results in a more natural and youthful appearance.

Facial Aging and Collagen Loss

Q: What are the visible effects of facial aging?
A: The visible effects of facial aging are the progressive changes you see when you look in the mirror and include loss of skin elasticity, sagging, forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet, smile lines, lip lines, marionette lines (lines framing your mouth) as well as changes to the color and texture of the skin and loss of volume.

Q: When does facial aging begin?
A: Facial aging usually begins in your 20s when the firmness of your skin begins to decrease. Wrinkles, blemishes, and sunspots may also start to appear, becoming more pronounced with age. Of course, changes vary from person to person.

Q: What factors contribute to facial aging?
A: Facial aging is caused by both internal and external factors. Internal (chronological) factors happen over time and are caused by genetics and the natural aging process. External (environmental) factors are things in the world around you, including sun exposure, smoking, pollution, gravity, facial expressions, and sleep position. All of these factors can contribute to changes in the skin and changes in facial bones.

Q: What is the role of collagen loss with facial aging?
A: Collagen is a fibrous protein in the dermis that gives structure to the skin, and provides the foundation for the retention of elastin and hyaluronic acid. Elastin is an elastic protein that helps maintain shape, while hyaluronic acid cushions and lubricates to keep the skin moist. With age and environmental damage, collagen is lost, and as time goes on, the body's natural production decreases. The damage to the underlying structure of the skin reduces the skin's ability to maintain elasticity and retain moisture.

The most effective agent that will reduce the appearance of collagen loss is Sculptra Aesthetic or poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra induces new collagen growth gradually over a course of several months. Because it induces the production of patient’s own collagen, the results lasts for years. This revolumenization of the face results in a more natural and youthful appearance.
