BEFORE YOU GET AN INJECTABLE TREATMENT...

Getting an injectable (Botox or fillers) treatment is simple, but to prevent complications, make sure you’ve got the following things covered beforehand:

1. Avoid ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), aspirin and other anti-inflammatories for 10 days to two weeks before your injections. This will reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising. Also, try to avoid drinking a few days prior to the injections.

2. If you are seeing a new physician, it’s important to notify your provider of the last time you had any injections, what was injected and specifically where. Not all injectables mix well, so be thorough.

3. Do not undergo injections if you are intoxicated or under the influence of any controlled substance.

4. If you are having your lip injected and are prone to cold-sores, notify your doctor in advance. A prescription for anti-herpetic medication can prevent a postinjection outbreak.

5. Try to arrange your treatments at least one week prior to any big event or occasion. You may have some visible swelling and/or bruising that even a great concealer cannot hide. Also, Botox or Dysport can take 3-7 days to take affect so if you want to have the full effect for an event, plan accordingly.

Dermal Fillers 101

imageDermal fillers are gel-like materials that are injected into unwanted folds, creases, and wrinkles to provide a more youthful appearance. Fillers can be used to augment the lip lines and the lips themselves, to fill creases and lines around the mouth, and to replace the volume loss that naturally occurs with aging.

The administration of a dermal filler is sometimes referred to as “soft tissue augmentation”. Treatment with a dermal filler is often combined with other beauty-enhancing procedures, such as botulinum toxin (Botox®), which can prolong their aesthetic effects.

Most dermal fillers used today are temporary fillers that are eventually absorbed into the body with diminished benefits over time. The major temporary fillers consist of collagen, hyaluronic acid, hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) is made from microspheres of a synthetic version of the material found in bones and teeth. Once the spheres are injected into the skin, the body slowly produces collagen around them. This filler lasts for a year or longer and is especially helpful for smoothing the folds that form around the side of the nose, mouth, and cheek, and for filling out hollow cheeks.

Collagen is a natural protein found in human skin that degrades with aging and sun exposure. Collagen injections have been used for many years to enhance lips and smooth out wrinkles. Originally, the collagen was derived from cattle and commonly triggered allergic reactions. This required allergy testing prior to treatment. In 2008, a newer form of collagen (Evolence®) became available. It does not carry the same risk for an allergic reaction and does not require allergy testing.

Hyaluronic acid (Juvederm®, Restylane®, Perlane®) is a natural, spongy material found in human skin. It helps provide support and thickness to skin. Injected into the skin in the form of specially-formualted hyaluronic fillers, it smoothes lines, wrinkles, and creases. The cosmetic benefits of a hyaluronic acid filler can be seen for 3 months to one year depending on the type of filler used and its location.

Poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra®) is made from absorbable suture material and is used for facial contouring and to smooth deep lines, hollows, and depressions. This filler stimulates collagen production, so multiple treatments spaced weeks apart are often necessary to see lasting results.
